Civil society group calls for attitudinal change of Securities Agents

The Civil Society Observatory Group, has disclosed that attitudinal change of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, is a critical factor in the effective and successful implementation of ACJA 2015 in Nigeria

The group in a statement on the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice in Nigeria said it has identified the urgent need for attitudinal change of police officers as critical for the successful implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 by the police.

The Group made this call during her 8th zonal observatory meeting with key stakeholders in the criminal justice sector in Oshogbo, Osun State.

While the Observatory group clearly recognizes the serious constraints, the police are faced with in the area of facilities and logistics on a daily basis, it.

It however noted that there are things the police can do as provided under the law that do not require funding to implement rather a change in police attitude and practices.

Some of such provisions of the Act include allowing a woman to stand as surety and also respecting the rights of suspect in police custody.

The group therefore called on the Police Authority to begin to effectively implement some of these provisions of the ACJA to improve public perception and confidence in the police, while.

While continued efforts are being made to advocate to the Federal and State Governments for funding so as to provide all that is required to enhance police capacity to effectively implement the law.

The Observatory group further called for continued sensitization of the citizens who are the beneficiaries of police services, for them to fully know and understand the provisions of the law as well as their rights under the law.

This would go alonga long way to ensure accountability and compliance of the police with the provisions of the Act.

The Observatory pledges its continued commitment to contributing towards the implementation of the ACJA, 2015 in Nigeria.
