Court dissolves banker’s 7-yr-old marriage over child neglect

A customary court at Oja-Oba, Ibadan, has dissolved a seven-year-old marriage for the husband’s alleged neglect of his child.

The petitioner, Latifat Afolabi, had approached the court seeking dissolution of her marriage to Muideen Afolabi over his alleged neglect of their three-year-old son

Latifat told the court on Friday that Afolabi had proven to be an “irresponsible husband” and his attitude had negatively affected the only child in the marriage.

She accused her in-laws of always being in support of her husband’s “bad” character because he was “a spoilt child.”

Latifat said her husband condemned whatever decision she made to move the family forward and expressed fear of how his attitude could have dangerous implications for the child. “My lord, I wish to have custody of my child,” she requested.

But the respondent, who claimed to be a worker with one of the new generation banks, denied Latifat’s allegations, saying he was a responsible husband and had been taking good care of his child before his wife deserted their matrimonial home in Lagos.

He said he decided to neglect the child and his mother when Latifat denied him access to his son. “I stopped giving her money because she didn’t allow me to have access to my child,” Afolabi told the court.

The president of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, said the fact that the couple had separated before they sought for divorce was an indication there was no more love between them.

Chief Odunade granted Latifat’s prayer to dissolve the marriage and also gave her custody of the child.

He ordered Afolabi to be paying the sum of N4,000 monthly into the child’s account through the court and should be responsible for his health and education needs.
