Dr Gabriel Akinremi, representative of the foundation disclosed this in a statement on Thursday to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Peace.
Akinremi said that the peace walk was organised by the foundation to promote peace, unity, and harmony within the community and raise awareness on issues affecting women globally.
He highlighted the roles of especially women and community members in fostering peace and called on policymakers, NGOs, CSOs, the private sector, and individuals to commit to promoting peace in every sphere of life.
“The International Day of Peace is observed on Sept. 21 annually around the world. It is a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and peoples.
“To commemorate this day, we recognize the peacebuilding efforts, that women play which is pivotal and often underappreciated
“Their involvement in mediation ensures a more inclusive and sustainable peace, as evidenced by their effective role in conflict prevention and resolution.
“Women’s active participation in conflict resolution processes helps rebuild relationships destroyed by conflicts and benefits societal development.
“Their engagement broadens the issues discussed, increases community buy-in, addresses root causes, and puts greater pressure on parties to reach agreements or return to the negotiating table when talks have faltered.
“Their participation also contributes to building trust and fostering cooperation among conflicting parties. Recognising and supporting these roles is crucial for promoting peace and harmony in our community,” it stated.
Dr Victoria Daaor, the Assistant coordinator of WPS Meditators Benue, who represented the coordinator urged participants at the walk to imbibe the culture of peace through meaningful dialogue.
She emphasised the profound significance of the substantial number of women who joined the peace walk, highlighting their strong commitment to peace and its pivotal role in propelling the community forward.
Daaor encouraged them to integrate the principles of peace into all aspects of their lives, adding that for it was a step towards ensuring women had representation at decision-making forums.
The coordinator of the women mediators’ media network, Mr. Thomas Yange, emphasised the media’s commitment to advancing peace and security across the urban and rural areas of Benue state.
He also emphasized the crucial role of thr media in promoting awareness and understanding that peace is essential for the progress of any society.
Also, the coordinator of HeForShe, Mr Nathaniel Awuapila, expressed satisfaction with the turn out of women and lauded the women mediator’s network, UN Women, Cleen foundation, and the Ministry of Women Affairs for the initiative to walk for peace.
“The role of women and children, how they suffer when it comes to conflict, and how men mostly find their way can not be overemphasised.
“When one talks about peace, you must talk about conflict,” he said.
Mrs Magdalene Andor, Director of Women’s Affairs and representative of the Commissioner of Women’s Affairs stated that it was impossible to ignore women’s crucial role in the fabric of our society.
“Women worldwide have long been the cornerstones of their families and communities.
“They are educators, caregivers, breadwinners, and activists. Yet, women are often disproportionately affected by conflict and violence.
“As we commemorate International Peace Day today, we must remember that peace is more than just the absence of war. Peace is about the presence of justice, equality, and opportunities for all.
“It is about living without fear, violence, and oppression. It is also about empowering women, who are vital to achieving and sustaining that peace,” she said.
