The Nigeria News Agency recalls that the council in view of the reality of the coronavirus pandemic and its commitment to enthrone basic standard hygiene, on March 24, shut down the Akwatta section of Ogbete Main Market.
The Akwatta section of the market, where tomatoes were predominantly sold, was closed due to environmental and hygienic concerns before the general closure of the entire Ogbete Main Market in Enugu.
The Chairman of the council, Chief Emeka Onunze, said in a statement made available to NAN) in Enugu on Saturday that the social media report was “false, misleading, baseless and mischievous’’.
Onunze said that it was a failed attempt to undermine the genuine efforts of the council to upgrade the environmental condition of the market for the health and wellbeing of the people.
The council boss who said that his “office is constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of overseeing the affairs of the market”, stressed that the council had no intention of selling any section of the market.
“We have temporarily relocated traders of the tomato market in Akwatta section of Ogbete Main Market to Garki Market, Enugu, to enable the council to rebuild that section of the market to standard before they return to the market to continue their business transactions.
“The administrative process for the reconstruction of the Akwatta section of the market is ongoing and we wish to reiterate that the project is dear to us and receiving urgent attention,’’ he said.
